A race that has nothing to do with tourism
For Siena, the Palio is not a performance. It is belonging. The city’s seventeen contrade — neighbourhoods with their own colours, traditions and loyalties — carry a rivalry that reaches back centuries. Ten compete in each race; the rest of the city watches with just as much at stake.
On 2 July, the Palio honours the Madonna di Provenzano. On 16 August, it honours the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Three laps around Piazza del Campo decide the winner. The race is brief. Everything that surrounds it is not.
In the centre of the square, spectators arrive early and wait on their feet, shoulder to shoulder. From a private balcony, the same anticipation unfolds below you — with a reserved place, space to breathe, and someone making sure you arrive where you need to be.
